Required QuestionsThe Art Criticism Process
Old Blog Post New Critique This art piece is a portrait of my grandparents made of pieces of paper cut out from a newspaper with a background and frame made out of parts of newspaper columns, newspaper ads, and newspaper subtitles. The element of this piece of artwork being made almost entirely out of newspaper allows it to iterate a specific theme that goes along with the portrait. In this piece I, the artist, am trying to connect my grandparents love for newspapers to them through a portrait of themselves as well as illustrate other interests of theirs from the pictures included in the frame. I wanted to create this piece of art in this way because I wanted to create a portrait that reflects my grandparents well. The history surrounding this work of art is that my grandparents both read the newspaper every day which is the reason why that it was created in this particular style. Also some of the reasons for including the pictures in the frame are that my grandparents are both of mediterranean descent, love to cook, my grandma loves animals, and my grandpa loves jazz and doing word puzzles and sudoku's. 3 Chosen Questions7.) The point of this class is to learn and/or develop skills and techniques relating to various forms of art including drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, and others. One of the techniques that we learned in this class that particularly helped me was drawing what I see rather than what I know. Focusing more on the shapes in references has helped me create more smooth and proportional drawings than when trying to just draw what I think the reference should look like. 16.) A project that I would do over with another opportunity would be my paper sculpture for the final project. The reason why I would want to do this is because I didn't feel like my current final product turned out the way I wanted and I feel like the theme was pretty generic and uninspiring. If I were to do it over again I would most definitely do it in a different style. I would want to make a piece that looks like a 3D paper cut out that pops out of the paper rather than a bunch of paper shapes glued together. I would also create it with a different theme. Instead of a flower I would rather go with my original idea for this project of a trolley. I would also like to incorporate a background into the image as well. 18.) The medium I enjoyed working with the most was the multi-medium collage. I liked this medium the most because it I enjoyed looking through pieces of print like magazines and newspapers to cut out pieces and fit them together in a piece of art. Also I liked putting the colors together in certain ways like a puzzle without having to worry about making the colors myself. A medium that I never used, but wish I had explored was digital art.

This portrait is of my grandparents who I picked to create a portrait of because I was going to visit them over Christmas break and I wanted to give them something special for Christmas. The mediums that I used for my piece were newspaper and pen on a canvas. The first thing I did in my process was make a sketch of the image on a blank canvas. From there I filled all the colors in with pieces cut out of a newspaper and made a frame out of other parts of the newspaper that relate to my grandparents. After I had put all the newspaper down I added a bit of shading to my grandparents faces with a pen.
